Mopping Up Disasters: Textiles Protect People and the Planet

It's difficult to forget the images from the 2010 Deep Horizon disaster. Miles of once pristine white beach and turquoise waters along the Gulf of Mexico were mired for months in a carpet of heavy black crude oil, punctured by tides bearing fish kills and beach fowl drowning in sludge.

Cotton and non-woven fabrics, including two nonwovens developed by Dr. Seshadri Ramkumar (of Texas Tech):  Low Micronaire Cotton, a waxy low-grade cotton that traps oil but repels water, and FiberTect (developed by First Line Technology), a three-layer nonwoven with an activated carbon layer designed to clean up chemical spills, oil spills, and the resulting fumes.

Clay County (MS) Installs New AmbuBus Kit
October 10, 2014

Clay County has only two ambulances, but with their new AmbuBus Kit (paid for with a grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health(MSDH), their capacity to transport injured will quadruple.

"Clay County and West Point only have two ambulances, and ambulances can only carry two people," said MSDH Emergency Response Coordinator Curtis Jernigan. "So this will come in handy if there's ever a situation where a large amount of people need to be transported for medical attention."

The AmbuBus Kit will be installed inside a school bus donated by the West Point School District to the West Point/Clay EMA and will transform the bus into a mass casualty response vehicle capable of transporting up to 12 stretcher-bound patients plus first responders and up to eight ambulatory patients.

According to an article from EMSWorld, many EMS systems run at or above full capacity on a daily basis, so when something unexpected happens - a multi-car accident, a deadly flu outbreak, a terrorist attack - first responders and receivers are heavily impacted.
